Review: Deathsmiles

A horizontal side scrolling shoot ’em up released by Japanese developer Cave back in 2007, This game was recently ported over to the XBOX 360. The game itself features several different versions of the original game, which varies from the original arcade version to the “mega black label” version that adds 1 new playable character and a couple extra stages, to XBOX specific versions featuring only slightly enhanced graphics.

Plot wise, Deathsmiles is about as simple as they get. You choose from one of 4 young (and questionably dressed for their supposed age) girls who have to fight through various areas against amassed demonic hordes. Beyond the lolita factor, the gameplay itself is standard bullet-hell fair with enemies coming at you from both sides (similar to the classic Forgotten Worlds). Graphics even with the enhanced 360 version modes are subpar at best, making me wonder if this was just a straight port of the arcade versions without any real effort on the developers part. Also, this is a game which has achievements for practically everything, including pausing the game. Beyond the difficulty of getting a 1-credit playthrough of the game, getting achievements is simply a matter of playing through multiple times over.

The collectors edition of the game runs $49.99 and features a bonus soundtrack & a collectors face plate. Beyond that, the game content itself is barely even worth a 800 point download let alone the price of a full game. At best it’s a all right rental, but definatly not worth the money.
